Kettlebells are like iron cannon balls with thick, loop shaped handles. They have been used for strength training in Russia for over three hundred years. They have few unique properties, only the special techniques of moving them, and the concepts behind the techniques, are something never seen by the general public in this country. Actually very few high level athletes here are cognizant either, although that is changing VERY rapidly. There are a nearly endless number of kettlebell drills that various athletes use to improve strength, speed, flexibility, balance, endurance, injury resistance, and to rehab injuries. Kettlebell drills tend to engage the entire body and certainly demand total focus. They teach the body to switch from high tension to relaxation and back very quickly, and to align itself correctly and safely. These traits smoothly carry over to all sports and daily activities. Training with kettlebells can be made extremely intense and for this reason many people use them to lose weight, get lean, and for general conditioning. In this sense kettlebells are superbly efficient. Training with kettlebells gives very quick and dramatic results.
